Alexander Smoltczyk rekonstruiert im Spiegel vom kommenden Montag unter der mäßig originellen und vom Text inhaltlich kaum gedeckten Überschrift “Der Fehlbare” die Ereignisse rund um die Regensburger Vorlesung von Benedikt XVI. Der Text liest sich stellenweise wie ein Krimi – und ist doch in großen Teilen eine Analyse der vatikanischen PR-Arbeit. Lesenswert.

Aus einem Spiegel-Gespräch (Ausgabe von morgen) mit Karim Aga Khan IV., geistliches Oberhaupt von 20 Millionen Ismailiten:

Der Islam ist von den Religionen, die auf Abraham zurückgehen, diejenige, die am meisten Wert auf Wissen legt. Ein wesentliches Ziel des Islam ist, Gottes Schöpfung zu verstehen, und deshalb wird unser Glaube ganz erheblich von Logik geprägt. Islam heißt Vernunft.

Die Muslime stehen absolut zu ihrer Religion, das ist religiöser Absolutismus. Und die Europäer stehen nicht mehr zu den Werten ihrer Zivilisation. Sie verwechseln Toleranz mit Relativismus.

Der Islam verbreitet nicht unbedingt den Glauben durch das Schwert – aber auf jeden Fall seine Rechtsordnung, die Scharia. Dies ist das Ziel des Dschihad.

Der Spiegel zitiert die Freitagspredigt von Scheich Omar al-Bakri aus dem Libanon.

Sein Thema: die Christen, die Juden – und der Dschihad.

Was der Papst gesagt habe, sei falsch und richtig zugleich, begann der erklärte Verehrer Osama Bin Ladens seine Predigt im nordlibanesischen Tripoli. Falsch sei alles, was der ungläubige Pontifex über den Propheten sagte – “ob er es nun zitiert oder gemeint hat oder was immer”.

Wahr hingegen sei, dass es im Glauben keinen Zwang gebe. Da lasse der Koran keinen Raum für Zweifel. “Wir gehen nicht vor wie die Christen in der Reconquista und sagen: Nimm unsere Religion an, oder wir bringen dich um!” Da sei der Koran ganz ohne Leidenschaft: “Ob die Ungläubigen lieber ungläubig bleiben und zur Hölle fahren wollen, das ist ihre Sache.”

Unmissverständlich und in jeder Hinsicht zwingend sei dagegen der Auftrag zum Dschihad: “Es gibt den Zwang, den Islam als politische Ordnung durchzusetzen – so wie die Heere des Islam Teile des Römischen und des Persischen Reiches erobert haben.” Dieser Auftrag sei selbstverständlich offensiv, beharrt Scheich Bakri: “Lasst euch da nichts vormachen.” Das Dar al-Harb, das Haus des Krieges, erobert der Islam “mit dem Schwert und nicht mit dem Gedanken”.

In thinking about this, I think we see again that now, 1 1/2 years after his election, just as in the case with the upcoming liturgical documents, Benedict is returning to the themes of his opening homily. He said at that time that we lived in a dictatorship of relativism. I honestly wouldn’t have thought to employ the example which Benedict did, but it has certainly caused a stir: secularists are outraged that Benedict dare argue that Christianity is better or true, muslims are outraged that the Pope –the Pope– didn’t affirm that Islam is better or true. Is there a dictatorship of relativism? Benedict may very well have purposely let this vivid quote fly, just to prove precisely this point.

Still no one else is talking about the fact that a Turkish Muslim killed a German Catholic priest the very day that Benedict critized violence in the name of religion…

The liberal, weakened “Christianity” of the Protestant communities cannot resist the onslaught of Islam; only staunch, traditional Christianity can stand against it, ready to defend its moral positions. In this battle, the Orthodox and Catholics could, even in the face of all the differences accumulated over the centuries, form a united front.

The primary purpose of the strategic cooperation that I propose should be the defense of traditional moral values such as the family, childbirth, spousal fidelity. These values are subjected to systematic mockery and derision in Europe by liberals and democrats of all types. Instead of spousal fidelity, “free love” is promoted, same-sex partnerships are equated with the union of marriage, childbirth is opposed by “family planning.” Unfortunately, we have serious differences in these matters with most Protestants, not to speak of fundamental differences of theological and ecclesiological character.

I will use as an example a conversation with a Lutheran bishop, held within the framework of a theological dialogue with one of the Northern Lutheran churches. We tried to prepare a joint document in the defense of traditional values. We began to talk about abortion. I asked: “Can we put in the joint document that abortion is a sin?” The Lutheran bishop responded: “Well, of course, we don’t promote abortion, we prefer contraception.” My question: “But abortion is in the opinion of your church, a sin, or is it not?” His reply: “Well, you see, there are various circumstances, for example, the life of a mother or child could be in danger.” “Well, if there is no threat to either the mother or the child, then is abortion a sin, or not?” And the Lutheran bishop still could not concede that abortion is a sin.

What is there to talk about then, if abortion is not a sin, same-sex marriage is fine, and contraception is wonderful? There it is, liberal Christianity in all its glory. It is clear for me that presently only Catholics and Orthodox preserve the traditional view of family values in Europe, and in this regard, as in many others, we are strategic partners.
